Spectrum shadow on Dayanidhi Alagiri wedding photos

All the flowers, festoons and music could not conceal a sulking DMK. With the 2G spectrum scam casting its shadow on the party, the wedding of Union minister M. K. Alagiri’s son, Durai Dayanidhi, turned out to be a tame affair.

Enthusiasm was palpably missing among DMK functionaries as well as cadres even as the leadership was anxious about its ties with the Congress.

The reasons for their anxiety was not far to seek. Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh both stayed away from the event.

It was left to the Congress’ chief trouble shooter, Pranab Mukherjee, to represent the party, though home minister P. Chidambaram and state unit in- charge Ghulam Nabi Azad were also in attendance.

To make up for the absence of Sonia and the PM, their greetings were read out for the audience by Dayanidhi Maran. And Karunanidhi had to take solace in the presence of Mukherjee and Chidambaram.

But the cloud of the 2G scam was evident as former telecom minister A. Raja and DMK patriarch M. Karunanidhi’s daughter Kanimozhi kept a low profile. Raja, who accompanied his boss on Wednesday night for the reception, vanished and was not even seen on the stage. So was Kanimozhi, who batted for Raja.

However, they were seated on the front row for the wedding.
