United States all set for the 4G revolution

That uncle or cousin of yours who stays in the United States? Well, it’s time you got jealous of him.

After some Scandinavian countries launched their 4G mobile Internet services earlier this year, the US is all set to reap the benefits of the superfast 4G network.

Cellular companies have already begun marketing 4G phones in the US (Apple launched its 4G - ready iPhone4 earlier this year while HTC launched its 4G Evo around the same time).

Next week, T- Mobile, one of America’s biggest cellular operators, will begin selling the HTC myTouch 4G. The 4G technology is so fast that it can achieve download speeds of up to 7 Mbps.

All 4G-ready phones offer Wi- Fi video chat, a front- and back- facing camera, high- definition video capture, large screen size, and superfast processors. Geeks may drool, but you and I will have to wait for a really long time before we get our hands on one of these babies.

It is not just in handset technology that the US is taking the great leap forward. Google, the world’s biggest online search company, has teamed up with Stanford University in California to wire up nearly 850 homes inside the campus for ultra high- speed broadband access.

Google said that, “ through this trial, we plan to offer Internet speeds up to 1 gigabit per second— more than 100 times faster than what most people have access to today.” Perhaps you’ve to enroll yourself at Stanford now.
