Railway rolls out first Double Decker Train in India



The Research Design & Standards Organisation (RDSO) of the Indian Railways has rolled out the India's first Double Decker Train after carrying out a successful test run at Lucknow with the maximum speed of 160 kmph.

This double-decker AC chair car train can accommodate 130 passengers which is more than 70 per cent of the usual trains. It has coach that has two floors connected with staircases and it has been provided with better suspension arrangements for comfort. Facilities in the Double Decker Trainare would be to the ones that are provided in Rajdhani and Shatabdi trains.

Pradeep Kumar, General Manager of Rail Coach Factory, Kapurthala said, "It is the latest design, which is made of stainless steel. Its coaches are fit to run up to the speed of 180 kilometer per hour. It is incorporated with all kinds of safety features. It is a design, which will have least impact on the passengers in case of an accident."

Mass production of coaches of these trains would take place in Kapoorthala. The trains may be run on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad and Howrah-Daund routes. In 2011-2012, six such trains will be built, apart from the usual trains which are already on the mentioned routes.
