Watching Rishi Kapoor as roly- poly Mr Duggal from Lajpat Nagar, you fall in love with the veteran’s screen presence all over again.

In his heydays as a conventional star, Rishi — or Chintu to fans — was mostly the cool loverboy. Love is still the backbone of his latest act. Only, this time he’s a 51- year- old teacher haplessly trying to balance inflation with the dreams of those he loves.


Do Dooni Chaar is a cute Dilliwaala film. It takes a tongue- in- cheek jibe at middle- class woes of the city through the story of your average family- next- door, just like Khosla Ka Ghosla did. The difference is, the Duggals here land in a self- created mess unlike the Khoslas who were fighting to regain what was rightfully theirs.

Mr Duggal’s picture of happy family completes itself with wife Kusum ( Neetu Kapoor, returning in a lead role after a long time). There are the kids too — a son and a daughter. Duggal’s struggling to live within a budget. Wife’s still cribbing because hubby didn’t let her continue with her job at the library all those years ago. The college- going daughter prefers her boyfriend’s swanky car to the boy himself. And the son’s bunking school on the sly to make moolah in the cricket satta market.

The problem starts when Mr Duggal vainly declares to neighbours that he could graduate within 15 days from his ramshackle scooter to a first- hand car — that ultimate snob statement that Dilliwaala's swear by.

Debutant Habib Faisal’s direction works for the way he underplays routine ironies of life. The film is predictable but never dull. Of course, you could also check out the film for its two lovable old- timers, who are in top form.
