Only 11 FCI officials hauled up till now

Mismanagement in the Food Corporation of India (FCI) continues to flourish and one doesn’t need to look far to understand why.

Out of the 1,172 FCI officials who were charge sheeted for “abnormal storage losses”, only four were dismissed while seven were asked to retire voluntarily.

This was revealed by the food ministry before the parliamentary standing committee on consumer affairs, food and public distribution.

The committee said it was “ pained” that action had been taken against only 11 erring officials.

“We feel that unless punitive action is taken against officials found indulging in corruption or dereliction of duty, the problem cannot be contained,” the panel said, asking the government to take “ deterrent punitive action” against corrupt officials.

The parliamentary committee had last year pulled up the ministry because almost 2.69 mega tons of food grain worth Rs 233.91 crore were lost on account of storage, transit and pilferage.

The government had said in response to the panel’s findings: “ The FCI initiated disciplinary proceedings against delinquent staff for abnormal storage and transit loss due to negligence.” It added that while 4,634 officials were involved in the incidents, charge sheets were issued only against 1,172 officers.

While four officials were dismissed and seven asked to retire, the salary of 43 others was reduced, three officers were demoted and 326 censured, the government said.
