Modi Issue Drags on After Inconclusive Meeting

There was some success for the absent Modi as the BCCI agreed to provide him with the minutes of some of its recent meetings. After the two and a half hour meeting in New Delhi, the Chirayu Amin headed disciplinary committee said that the next meeting will be held on August 1 in Delhi.

The BCCI said in a statement that it has provided to Modi the minutes of the meeting of the governing council dated April 26, 2010, the relevant extracts in relation to the show cause notices issued to Mr Modi in the minutes of the governing council dated June 25, 2010, and the special general meeting dated July 3, 2010. The extract of the minutes of the meeting of the governing council dated June 25, 2010, also relate to the cancellation of the media rights agreement between BCCI and World Sports Group (India).

“ His counsel argued that this agreement is relevant for the purposes of his preparation of his defence in the main case as also the application for recusal filed by him. The BCCI has agreed to provide a copy of this agreement to the counsel for Mr Modi on the condition that this document and its contents shall be used only for the purposes of this inquiry and the proceedings arising out of this enquiry and for no other purposes,” said a joint statement from Amin and his panel members Arun Jaitley and Jyotiraditya Scindia.

“ The reason for this secrecy is that in the agreement signed by Sony- MSM contains a confidentiality clause and a limited waiver has been given to BCCI to limit the use of this document for Mr Modi only for the purposes of this enquiry. BCCI has requested the counsel of Mr Modi to file an undertaking that this document will not be used for any other purpose but only for the purpose of this inquiry,” read the statement.

Modi’s counsel Mahmood Abdi confirmed that he had received “ certain documents” and termed this a “ positive progress”. While terming the meeting as “ inconclusive”, Abdi said that Modi was sticking to his demand of recusal of Amin and Jaitley from the panel and appointment of a panel of independent members.
