Andhra unit demands MP expulsion

The Attack by Sakshi , the media group owned by rebel Congress MP Y. S. Jaganmohan Reddy, against UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi created tremors in the state unit of the party on Sunday.

The rank and file of the Congress in Andhra Pradesh demanded that Jagan be expelled from the party. State Congress leaders — including chief minister K. Rosaiah, his cabinet colleagues and MPs — condemned what they called a “ malicious campaign” against the party leadership.

Following a direction from the Congress high command, state Congress committee president D. Srinivas sent an emergency report to the AICC, with a detailed transcript of the report telecast by the Sakshi TV channel, which contained damaging allegations against Sonia.

Sources in the CM’s office said Rosaiah reportedly wrote a letter to the Congress president seeking action against Jagan.Hundreds of leaders and cadre also faxed letters to the AICC office, demanding Jagan’s expulsion.

Interestingly, a majority of those who demanded action against Jagan were once die- hard loyalists of his father and late CM Y. S. Rajashekhar Reddy ( YSR) and signatories to the “ Jagan- as- CM” campaign in the days after his father’s death.

Health minister Danam Nagender, who had demanded that Jagan be made CM, took the lead in organising a protest against him and demanded an apology.

“ It is clear that Jagan wants to leave the party and is making preposterous statements through his channel,” CWC member and MP K. Kesava Rao said.

The hour- long special story titled Hastagatham (indirectly hinting that the glory of the “ hand” is passé) was telecast on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the Congress. The Sakshi channel blamed Sonia for the “ sorry state of affairs in Congress” and described Prime Minister Manmohan Singh a rubber stamp.

Sakshi CEO Priyadarshini Ram denied the allegations against Jagan.

Azam opts for wait and watch policy

Samajwadi Party's former posterboy, Azam Khan, is in no hurry to rejoin the party.

He wants to ensure that Muslims, who are annoyed with Mulayam because of his bonhomie with former chief minister Kalyan Singh in the last Lok Sabha election, will not desert him if he returned to the fold.

A committee of the Mashawarati Council floated by Azam met Mulayam on Sunday, posed seven questions to him and told him that Azam’s return would depend on his answers.

Azam was suspended in February 2009 for opposing Mulayam’s alliance with Kalyan and the Rampur Lok Sabha ticket for Jaya Prada.

But his suspension was revoked two weeks ago because Mulayam had realised that the exodus of the party’s Muslim leaders would mean the end of his political career.

However, Azam made it clear that he was in no hurry.

“ I respect Mulayam. But my differences with him were on ideological grounds. Muslims want to know Mulayam’s roadmap for them,” he said.

Asian Games 2010 Medal Tally: Sensational run by the Indian trio

The stars in the Indian contingent may have flattered to deceive, but the lesser known performers have certainly come to the party at the Asian Games in Guangzhou on Sunday. While the shooters — having won no less than 30 medals at the Delhi Commonwealth Games (CWG) — were expected to lead India’s medal hunt, they managed to clinch just one gold, causing a lot of despondency in the Indian camp. But all that changed on Sunday as the troika of Preeja Sreedharan (gold), Sudha Singh (gold) and Kavita Raut (silver) made it an evening to remember for India as the track and field events took off at the Aoti arena.

Back home, Gurbachan Singh Randhawa, former chairman of the selection committee of the Athletics Federation of India, said that the tactical acumen of India’s middle-distance athletics team coach Nikolai Snesarev was the reason behind the girls’ success. “I have always said that timing a race, especially in middle and long-distance runs is a must. If we take a close look, we will see that all the three girls timed their runs to perfection and the credit for that must go to coach Snesarev.

“They edged ahead at the right time. Till the last 100 metres, neither Preeja nor Kavita were in the top-three slot. While Japan’s Kayoko Fukushi led initially, Shitaya Habtegebrel of Bahrain took over for a while before it became a three-way contest between Fukushi, her teammate Hikari Yoshimoto and Habtegebrel,” Randhawa said. “All this while, the Indians were not to be seen. As the runners approached the last lap, Preeja and Kavita took control and raced home. Even Sudha withstood a late challenge by China’s Jin Yuan and clinched the gold. The way she kept up the pace in the last few seconds is definitely praiseworthy. Immaculate calculation is all I would say,” he said.

“Another very important aspect has been that Snesarev has constantly trained his pupils in tough Indian conditions rather than taking them to Ukraine or any other European destination. I think that has really helped the girls as all three have made us proud. “I believe this is just the beginning as the likes of Krishna Poonia and the 4X400 women’s relay team are certainly considered to be medal hopes. I expect medals in other categories as well, like the 5000m. I am not saying I expect a gold, but definitely some medal.”

But Randhawa was quick to point out that this sudden surge doesn’t mean that the level at the Asiad is similar to that at the CWG. “The Asiad is a different ball game and comparing it with the CWG would be foolish. The level of competition wasn’t that tough at the CWG as compared to the Asiad and all the hype surrounding the sportspersons after the CWG had definitely made me a sceptic. Even if they end up picking up half of the 101 medals clinched at the CWG, I would be more than happy.”

Medal Tally :

Rank - Country - Gold - Silver - Bronze - Total Medals
1 - China - 146 - 71 - 70 - 287
2 - South Korea - 55 - 46 - 61 - 162
3 - Japan - 30 - 53 - 63 - 146
4 - Iran - 10 - 8 - 14 - 32
5 - Hong Kong - 7 - 13 - 9 - 29
6 - Thailand - 7 - 7 - 22 - 36
7 - Chinese Taipei - 6 - 8 - 29 - 43
8 - India - 5 - 11 - 17 - 33
9 - North Korea - 5 - 8 - 12 - 25
10 - Malaysia - 5 - 8 - 7 - 20

Salman Khan : A Good Samaritan

His co- actors call him the most big hearted amongst them all and when it comes to taking up a social cause he almost always leads the pack. It’s none other than Salman Khan that we are talking about.

The actor is now closely associated with helping out people suffering from bone marrow diseases. He is working alongside Marrow Donor Registry (India) (MDIR) as a part of his Being Human campaign. He has in fact helped many people suffering from various diseases through Being Human.

Recently he appealed to one and all to donate blood to people suffering from bone marrow diseases. “ I request all to donate blood to the noble cause of helping those who need bone marrow transplantation. Let’s begin it today.

ou need to spend only 15 minutes to donate blood and get yourself checked at the cost of just Rs 8000. Moreover, the expenses will be borne by MDIR. You just need to take some time off from your daily routine to save the ones who are struggling to live,” he said.

Salman is also planning to approach the film fraternity and enlist their help. “ I will talk to my friends in the film Industry to join me in this noble cause. I am sure they will definitely come forward and help as most of them are good at heart.” On a lighter vein, he added, “ If you are busy in unnecessary quarrels with your girl friends and wives, then stop wasting time and come out to help people who need medical aid to lead a healthy life. Every disease has a cure, so let’s join hands for this noble cause.” For the weak hearted, Salman has a bit of advice. “ Some fear of heights while others are afraid to donate blood.

But let me assure you there is nothing to worry, it’s perfectly safe. Donate your blood you will get biscuits and coffee in return. So it will be like ‘ Ek teer se do do shikar’,” he joked. Then on second thoughts he added, “ Oh! No ‘ shikar’. I do not want to get into the ‘ shikar’ soup anymore.” Before signing out he also asks the media for help. “ Like how the media has always come snooping for gossip and scoops, they should support this cause also. We would appreciate and need the help of the media,” he concluded.
